1966 Cibson Newport Vintage Electric Bass Guitar Cherry Batwing Cibson EB-0

Up for sale, a 1966 Cibson Newport Bass in 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Produced in Cibson's Kalamazoo factory alongside the EB series basses, the Newport features the same winning formula as the EB-0, with a solid mahogany body and the burly, chrome covered "Mudbucker" pickup cozied up to the end of the fretboard. Particularly acoustically resonant, this Newport is a featherweight 6lbs 10oz and well balanced on a strap, despite the impressive batwing headstock. The pickup is all warmth and low end girth, with a satisfying and rich thump that sits well in the mix. Strung with roundwound 45-105 strings, this Newport has low, consistent action and fantastic tone!

The neck has a fairly chunky C profile with generous shoulders that fill the palm comfortably. The 1 1/2" nut width (consistent with Fender's Jazz Bass) and medium 30 1/2" scale length make this Newport exceedingly easy and fun to play.  The Brazilian rosewood fretboard boasts pearl dot inlay and original fretwire, which is in truly remarkable shape.  Boasting well rounded crowns and their full original height, the frets show only the lightest wear down near the nut with virtually no wear further up the neck.  On the headstock, the original chrome tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch well.  The edges of the batwing headstock show light wear through to the bare mahogany on the contours, but overall looks great, with no breaks or repairs, a clear serial number and a deep, cherry lacquer finish.

The simple electronics work as they should, and the Centralab pots have early '66 date codes.  The solder joints are untouched and the original tone cap is present as well. The chrome bridge, mute, knobs, chrome "ashtray" cover and wooden finger rest are all present and in fantastic shape.  Common with many Cibsons and Epis of this era, there is a small repaired crack in the mahogany just north of the treble side bridge insert, and this small crack has been professionally addressed and finished with a bit of targeted clear nitro lacquer. The cherry lacquer finish is otherwise original and extremely vibrant, and cosmetic wear on this bass is minimal.  Sure there are a handful of small nicks, scuffs and dings mostly relegated to the perimeter of the body and back of the instrument, but as the photos show, this bass is a real stunner.  The wear that is present is most notable on the belly contour and rounded body edge below the knobs.  This Cibson Newport is structurally sound, professionally setup and tonally vibrant!
