1970s Greco Precision Bass Vintage Electric Bass Flame Maple Japan Fujigen w/gb
Up for sale, a 1970's Greco Precision Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This vintage bass was manufactured in Japan during the heyday of the "lawsuit era," with specs that are clearly inspired by the instrument's Fender cousin. Manufactured in Japan's famed Fujigen factory, these Greco instruments provided stiff competition on the market for their excellent playability and tone. However, despite strict adherence to Precision Bass specifications in many regards, what makes this Greco stand out is the solid flame maple body. This tone wood gives the bass a very articulate top end and and quick attack, which compliments the more traditional full, fundamental thump of the split-coil pickup very well. There's also a dry, punchy midrange character to this bass that makes it more present in ensemble situations than many P Basses. At 11lbs 4oz, the weight of the instrument gives it incredible sustain too! Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Greco features comfortable action and a nicely worn in set of D'Addario Chromes flatwound strings.
The maple neck has a very subtle V profile with nicely rounded shoulders, filling out to a medium C shape as you move up the fretboard. The fretboard edges have been rolled and smoothed over from decades of use, and the gloss finish on the profile feels great on the palm. The original frets are intact, with a slightly more slender vintage width and very well rounded crowns. The frets show sparingly little wear and the bass plays cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width and is a bit on the slender side, making for a happy medium between traditional J and P nut widths and very manageable for smaller hands. The headstock boasts a set of original chrome tuning machines with clover buttons, and a "Greco - Electric Bass" block logo reminiscent of Fender's logos on their '70s instruments (the headstock shape is very correct too).
All of the electronics work as they should, with the original split-coil Greco P pickup and stock pots, with a brand new Switchcraft 1/4" input jack. The pickguard is a modern lightly aged white replacement, which has a very close fit to the original pickguard, only requiring a couple extra mounting holes to be drilled to mount the guard cleanly. There is a tiny route on the edge of the control cavity near the input jack for a previously installed (and now removed) oversized input jack. The slight edge of this route can be seen in photo #12, but is almost entirely covered by the pickguard. The original chrome four saddle bridge, "Made in Japan" four-bolt neck plate, and stock strap buttons are also present.
Cosmetically, this bass is quite clean, and the construction of the body is utterly unique, with two bookmatched pieces of solid flame maple sandwiched together. There are some assorted tiny nicks and dings from light, honest use on the body and neck, and the faint outline of a sticker on the maple which was removed (located between the G string and the knobs). There is also concentrated pick wear that has worn through the gloss finish in this same area, but no serious or structural wear of any kind!
This Greco bass is one of the nicer and rarer vintage Japanese-made, Fender-style instruments of the "lawsuit era," and an instrument that has been dialed in for optimal playability and tone with flatwound strings!
A gigbag is included.
