We've covered the background regarding Nitrocellulose Lacquer in previous listings, and in short "Nitro" finishes are thinner and more pliable than modern poly finishes. The use of this finish chemistry dates back to the early days of guitars, and for many tone aficionados only Nitro will do. Is it all hype? Difficult to say, but the concept of thinner more flexible finishes being beneficial certainly makes sense. It's wood after all, and even on a solid body guitar you want it to resonate.

Nitro does look different, and the coloring is slightly less intense than poly finishes and with a slightly less glossy, less "plastic" sheen. In a traditional three color sunburst, it looks truly "vintage" without being aged or beat up. There are some areas in the finish where it "sinks" slightly into the grain. This is a feature -- not a defect -- and it highlights the thinner more pliable nature of these finishes.

The neck on this LB 100 is what they call a 'Medium C' profile. It harkens back to a style offered in the 80's, with a 1 5/8" nut width that measures right in between traditional P and J bass widths. The fretboard is their new standard 9.5" radius, and little bit of additional curvature makes the neck comfortable and easy to reach around, even for J-bass lovers. All the nitro G&L's also have nitro tinted gloss necks. The coloring and gloss level is a beautiful light honey color. Maybe it's our imagination but it seems to feel smoother and less grippy than a poly finished neck.

We tend to think of P-style bass guitars as warm and woody, with not a lot of pop or attack. The LB-100 surprised us with a bright, piano-like tone that we'd more expect out of a Jazz bass. Actually it's not so much brightness as it is ample harmonic content. It's got character and complexity that makes you want to listen to the bass, and not just treat it like a low frequency metronome. The G&L-made Alnico 5 pickup has a nice wide response, and even with its central mounting location provided an ample amount of high end content. Overall character was round and full, with a broad response that feels open and spacious. Although sporting just passive volume and tone controls, we were able to dial in our groove pretty quickly, and minor adjustments in tone and volume can greatly vary the character of the sound.

Elsewhere, typical G&L design details are evident: Plek'd 6-bolt neck, Aluminum tuning pegs to reduce headstock weight and improve balance, neatly wired controls with full-sized pots, and G&L's substantial and fully adjustable saddle lock bridge.
