1968 Fender Telecaster Vintage Electric Guitar Sunburst, Ash Body, Rosewood
Up for sale, a 1968 Fender Telecaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This vintage Tele has been well cared for and has been professionally restored with a warm and vibrant body-only three-tone sunburst refinish, in addition to a top notch refret with vintage correct fretwire. The neck profile has an extremely smooth and honestly worn in original nitro lacquer finish, and '68 was the last year that Fender utilized nitro lacquer on their instruments in the early CBS era! The tone is resonant and authoritative, with great chime, cut, and twang via the original pair of single coil pickups. At 8lbs 2oz, this ash-bodied Tele has just enough weight to add a certain heft and roundness to the note attack, and all pickup positions are unique and distinctive. The bridge pickup is clear and strident, with a certain sweetness and the ability to deliver sinewy hollow twang, a feature that really becomes evident on the wound strings. The neck pickup has more thickness and width, perfect for solos and fattening up a fuzz pedal, while still being firmly in Fender single coil territory in terms of detail and snap. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Tele with 10-46 strings, comfortable action, and solid intonation.
The neck has a medium C profile that borders on the chunkier side of things, with shoulders that have just enough roundness while still feeling sleek and fast. There's a bit of light birdseye figuring in the maple on the profile, and much of the original gloss nitro lacquer has been worn down to the smooth bare wood from light, consistent use over the decades. The rosewood fretboard retains the original 7 1/4" radius, and the guitar has seen sparingly little use since it was cleanly refretted with wire that matches the height, width, and crown of the original frets. Currently, the guitar shows only the faintest wear on the crowns of the G and B strings on frets 1-3, with virtually no wear up the neck. The truss rod is responsive, and the neck is arrow straight with a generous veneer board that's quite thick and sports original pearl dot inlays. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and the original plastic nut has been substituted for a hand carved piece of bone that provides ideal string spacing and matches the fretboard radius well. On the headstock, the original Fender "F" chrome tuning machines are intact, and while a couple of other tuner sets were at one time installed, the F tuners cover any extra mounting holes with the exception of two tiny ones adjacent to the low E gear housing. The original "Fender Telecaster" logo is clean and intact as well.
All of the electronics work as they should, and are completely stock, with pots that date back to mid '66, a feature common with all late '60s Fenders, as CBS purchased a bulk of CTS pots that lasted from 1966 through the end of the decade. The original black bobbin neck pickup has the correct push back cloth wire (last full year for this feature), and the original bridge pickup is present as well, with a clean pencil date on the gray bobbin from 3/18/68. This matches up with the clean and bold date stamp on the neck heel, which dates to April of '68. The body routes are original and unmodified, and all of the original hardware is intact including the patent number Fender ashtray bridge base, knurled metal knobs, top hat switch tip, and original three-ply white pickguard.
The body-only refinish was done in nitro lacquer and applied professionally, although it's worth noting that it's a bit more bold and glossy than many Fender finishes of the era, with a more stark transition between the layers of the sunburst, and a deeper, almost burgundy shade to the middle red layer, especially on the lower bout. The ash on the body has a very straight, tight, and prominent grain, highlighted by the warm amber center of the burst, and there's just enough honest age on the body post-refin to give the guitar a consistent look and decidedly vintage appeal. One small repaired crack extends about 1" from the bass side edge of the neck pocket but has been professionally addressed, and the pocket is both tight and stable. There are a few small chips in the finish on the edges of the body, with light finish scratches mostly relegated to the back, but otherwise this instrument is quite clean and as striking as the photos show it to be!
A modern hardshell case is included.
