2010 Fender Telecaster Thinline NOS Custom Shop Relic Gold Sparkle w/COA & Cases
Up for sale, a 2010 Fender Custom Shop Telecaster Thinline in exceptional condition, with an eye-catching metalflake gold sparkle finish. Part of the Custom Shop's line of Relic instruments, this Tele is classified as an "NOS" model, with no simulated wear. A very rare instrument crafted to the exacting standards of Fender's most revered craftsmen, this Tele combines features both modern and vintage to satisfy players who want modern playability and reliability, with important cosmetic and tonal considerations that are decidedly vintage. While this guitar is largely based on the first iteration of the Tele Thinline (available briefly from 1968-71), this guitar blends this model with features akin to an early '50s Tele, including a full C shaped neck profile, ash body, brass bridge saddles, Nocaster flat pole piece bridge pickup (paired with a Twisted Tele neck pickup), and all slotted screws used throughout. Low profile Sperzel tuners with pearloid buttons round things out for a wholly unique Telecaster model.
This guitar chimes and twangs with the best of them, with a very smooth and even response from both pickups. While this Tele certainly has cut and bite, it's never too bright, and the top end is pleasing and well rounded, likely due in part to the semihollowbody construction that smooths out note attack and gives the guitar an airy and full quality not necessarily attributed to a solidbody instrument. Weighing in at 7lsb 5oz, the acoustic voice of this Tele is authoritative and pleasing, and the resonance and clarity of the instrument is something heard both unplugged and through the Custom Shop pickups. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Tele has low, slinky action and 10-46 strings.
The maple neck has a very well rounded and substantial C shaped profile, with generous shoulders and good depth without quite venturing into U shaped territory. This guitar is essentially a new old stock piece and has never been privately owned, and as such there is no fretwear to report. The 6105 frets have perfect crowns and slightly more height than vintage wire for easier bending and longer frer life. The 1 5/8" nut matches the 9.5" modern radius of the fretboard, and the headstock has a simple "Fender" decal on the face in classic Nocaster style. The Custom Shop logo is present on the reverse side of the headstock, and the chrome Sperzel tuners look great and hold pitch flawlessly.
All of the electronics work as they should, with a Twisted Tele pickup in the neck position, wound with formvar coated magnet wire which adds the brightness and glassiness you would expect out of a Telecaster. This wire is wrapped round a set of Alnico 5 magnets for a focused midrange and enhanced dynamic range which adds in some Strat like overtones to the pickups sound. This pickup balances well with the stock Nocaster bridge pickup, that is traditional Tele twang all the way. The chrome bridge plate and knurled metal knobs are flawless, and the original protective plastic is still on the neck pickup cover and single-ply white pickguard. As per vintage spec, the serial number is stamped on the bridge plate, with an "R" prefix, denoting the guitar's Custom Shop Relic status.
Cosmetically, this guitar is near mint, with only one nick through the finish on the edge of the top adjacent to the rear strap button. There is also faint finish checking along the bass side of the lower bout on the side of the guitar, also adjacent to the rear strap button. Simply put, the guitar absorbed a light impact where the finish chip is located, and aside from that there is zero wear on this guitar, which has never been privately owned and is near mint. The deep metalflake gold sparkle finish is certainly an uncommon one and an undeniably cool look, with a depth and richness to the finish that surpasses the typical range of Fender golds.
The instrument is complete with not only one, but two original hardshell cases. This guitar shipped from the factory with both a tweed "thermometer" case and a modern SKB/Fender hardshell. The guitar will be sent in its factory shipping box which accommodates both cases. The original Certificate of Authenticity, unopened case candy, hang tag, strap, and Fender cable are all included as well.
