Luthier (ret.) Made
Bridge
with 2 1/4" string spacing
This is
the last one.
I’ve
retired from lutherie, but still like to putter around in the shop. So
I've been making bridges and slotting fretboards. This bridge is made of Jatoba, sometimes
called Brazilian Cherry. It's beautiful stuff. Very hard and dense
but easy to work and takes a high polish. One of my favorite guitars was
a Classical I made entirely out of this wood. I still own it, in
fact. Jatoba mellows into a beautiful reddish brown, similar to Chechen
but with a more open grain pattern. It's extremely durable,
sometimes used for high-end flooring.
The
bridge is the standard Martin outline with a 3/32" saddle slot width.
Apart from the string spacing and a slightly larger footprint, its overall
dimensions are virtually the same as Stewmac’s
standard bridge (4923). (I like
to think mine is significantly better than those Stewmac sells;
and I know for sure it is better than those you can get from the Far
East.)
It also
has a particular refinement I often build into my bridges: the peg holes
are in a gentle arc rather than a straight line. That way, you don’t have
six holes lining up through the long grain and inviting a longitudinal
split. (Any repair guy will tell you how often that’s a problem with
the usual acoustic guitar bridge.) There’s no effect on
intonation, etc. And it does look kind of cool. Check out the picture.
If you're
just starting out in lutherie, this set will get you through some of the tricky
parts. I think you’ll like it. As always, if you do not, send it back to me
and I’ll cheerfully refund your money.
