ASHDOWN TOURING 330 115H BASS AMPLIFIER 330 WATT RMS,NEW!

NO. 20Both tuning guide LED illuminate when you’re in tune. They stream from left to right when the note is sharp and from right to left when it’s fl at. Half strobe mode offers the same streaming, but the centre LED lights up when you’re in tune. In mirror mode, you’ll know you’re in tune when the two LEDs on the left and right sides of the centre LED meet in the middle and both tuning guide LED’s are lit.STAMP OF APPROVALThe Pitchblack is indeed a groovy little tuner for the stage, although I probably wouldn’t use it for “workbench” stuff like intonating a guitar, despite the strobe mode that, although handy, is still a digital recreation of what a real strobe tuner looks like, rather than an actual strobe tuner. The display is plenty accurate for stage work and even tuning in the studio, but I’d feel more comfortable with an old-fashioned “needle” tuner or one with a digital readout that measured in tiny numerical increments. That’s just one little niggle, though, and if you don’t do a lot of setup work, I would recommend the Pitchblack without hesitation.By Peter HodgsonHere’s the deal: you need powerful, punchy, reliable bass tone, but you also hate lugging amps around. You’re pleased that bass technology allows for much smaller amps than guitarists have to deal with, but in a way that just makes bass amp heads another oddly-sized, tricky little piece of kit to struggle with during load in. So what’s Ampeg gonna do about it?NOW YOU SEE IT...The fi rst thing you notice about the Portafl ex cabinet is that... the top comes off. What? No, this is not some kind of acoustic chambering thing. Inspired by the old Ampeg B-15, the Portafl ex head actually screws onto the underside of the cabinet’s top for storage. Then when it’s time for the gig, you just unlatch the top of the cabinet, fl ip it upside down, and there’s your head. It couldn’t be easier, and it adds a kind of “Transformers” appeal to the unit that will be loved by generations X and Y alike. So what exactly are we looking at here? Well, the Portafl ex amp is available in PF-350 and PF-500 models – I reviewed the more heavily-specced PF-500. The PF-500 offers 500 watts RMS power at 4 ohms through a Class D power amp and a MOSFET-driven preamp. The expected tone controls are there (bass, middle, treble) as well as: a fi ve-way mid-tone control, which alters the midrange characteristics from low-mid-heavy to upper-mid-enhanced; separate ultra hi and ultra low pushbuttons; an onboard compressor with overload LED; balanced director out with pre/post EQ option, selectable -40dB pad and ground lift; a footswitchable effects loop with dedicated mix control; power amp in/preamp out (and it’s nice to see this as a separate section rather than an effects loop that’s also labelled power amp in/preamp out). There are also front-mounted 1/8-inch headphone out and auxiliary line inputs, a -15 dB input pad and a footswitchable mute button. The unit is very sturdily constructed. I tested the amp with the PF-115HE cabinet, which offers vintage Portafl ex styling (black diamond tolex, vintage B-15 grille cloth, rugged 15mm poplar ply enclosure) and a single 15-inch ceramic Eminence low frequency driver paired with a one-inch high frequency drive with level control. The cabinet is a well-balanced 20.4kg.GOOD CLEAN FUNThe PF-500’s tone is extremely clear and versatile, but rockers beware: if fat, greasy, tube-driven tone is what you’re after, Ampeg offers that in quite a few amps, but not this one. I couldn’t get the preamp to distort under any circumstances. That’s great news for funk and soul players, dub players, jazz musicians, pop musicians, country bassists... in fact, it’s far easier to think of players who will love this amp than those who won’t dig it. The compressor is almost like a secret weapon in dialling in the right amount of punch, while the midrange frequency selection switch is great for tailoring the response of the amp to your pickups or the needs of the particular song. It’s easy enough to access that it won’t be a big deal to stroll over between tunes and fl ip it to whichever setting suits your song the best. There are some great ‘80s pop-style bass tones on offer, and some very dynamic jazz/fusion solo tones, too. It handles both active and passive basses equally well, and if you like your bass tone minus any hint of gritty edge, you’ll probably really enjoy what the PF-500 has to offer. Rock players who thrive on amp overdrive will be put off, but then again, the preamp is so clean that it sounds great with fuzz effects. FEELING FLEXYThe Portafl ex concept is a great Ampeg innovation, and it’s cool to see a modern update like this. It makes a lot of sense from a practical standpoint, and also... it’s just really cool! The PF-500 has plenty of tonal versatility for a wide variety of professional playing applications, and it’s built tough enough that even it if wasn’t bolted to its cabinet, it’d probably withstand quite a few drops. It’s very roadworthy indeed.By Peter HodgsonAshdown’s Dual Tube bass preamp was fi rst unleashed in the 427 Small Block, and in 2001 it now appears in a variety of other amps. While it’s not uncommon for an amp company to use a particular design in a variety of power formats, Ashdown offers a whopping six combos and two heads based on the Dual Tube. It’s a strategy that is surely designed to show off the preamp’s versatility in the face of whatever speaker confi guration or power rating you throw at it.The line consists of the 330 and 550 heads (330 and 550 watts respectively), a pair of 220 watt combos with 1x12-inch and 1x15-inch speakers, 1x15-inch and 2x10-inch 330 watt combos, and 1x15-inch and 2x10-inch 550 watt combos. If you wish to expand your rig, Ashdown also offers matching 1x12-inch, 1x15-inch, 2x12-inch and, somewhat uniquely for bass, 4x12-inch speaker cabinets.GETTING DOWNThe 330 Touring 115H partners the Dual Tube preamp with an uprated MAG power stage and pumps it into a custom 15-inch drive and a high frequency horn. Construction is utterly bulletproof (and it’s deceptively heavy, too). The cabinet features vinyl covering, chrome protective corners and vintage red grille cloth. The unit weighs only 24kg, but the weight distribution makes it pretty tricky to lift. Bring a buddy if you’re tackling stairs, okay? The front panel consists of: high and low gain inputs; a front-mounted effects loop (thank you very much, Ashdown!); bass, middle and treble controls with mid shift, bass shift and bright switching; mute switch; pre/post switch for the DI output; gain and master volume controls; and a funky illuminated VU meter, an Ashdown trademark. At the heart of the preamp sits one ECC83 valve and one ECC82. BASS IN YOUR FACEThe 330 Touring 115H is a monstrous rock bass amp. I plugged in with my ‘80s Fernandes Jazz Bass copy loaded with DiMarzio Area J pickups and let fl y with some blues rock riffs played fi ngerstyle. The sound was big and aggressive, especially with that gain control ratcheted up to the woolly end. The mid shift switch came in very handy for taming some of the low midrange thickness that I found sounded cool on its own but which would have made for a cluttered mix if other instruments were added. Ashdowns all seem to have a specifi c, recognisable upper mid and treble characteristic, which can, if pushed, lend an almost plectrum-like tonal quality to fi ngerpicked lines. Play with an actual pick and you can fi nd some pretty neat tones by turning on the bright switch but rolling back the treble rot
