Chilo 24" Custom Short Scale Bass - Kala U-Bass Style Strings and Electronics

Introducing the Chilo Short Scale Bass. These custom made in the USA basses are each one of a kind. They feature a 24" scale, LR Baggs under saddle piezo pick-up, battery free Mi-Si rechargeable electronics (which offer 8 hrs. play time off of a 60 second charge), Hip Shot tuners and Road Toad Pahoehoe strings.

The hand crafted bodies and necks are sanded to 600 grit and finished with four coats of oil. This is topped with two coats of hand rubbed poly for added protection and durability. The rosewood fret boards are treated with lemon oil

I do not promote these as Bass Ukes as they have a longer scale and bigger body than a U-Bass. They are more equivalent in size to a 24" scale electric guitar.

The particular bass listed here is a fretted 4 string and features a chambered maple body with ambrosia (wormy) maple veneers front and back. The bridge is rosewood, the saddle maple and the headstock is also veneered with ambrosia maple to match the body. Please see my other listings for other basses available.

I began building these basses after purchasing one of the USA made models from the big name in the Bass Uke market. I never have had the the finger spread to effectively play a bass as one should plus I play a 5 string so a short scale wasn't really an option. I loved the ease of play, and the sound was impressive but I couldn't get past the fact that the instrument looked and felt like a toy.

As a long time woodworker I knew I could create something better.

First off was the quality of workmanship. There really is no comparison between a hand crafted instrument and a mass produced one.

Next was improving upon the playability. The longer scale of the Chilo creates greater tension which improves the performance of the strings, they aren't so floppy. It is also a more natural scale for a guitar player looking to play bass and less of a change for a true bass player.

Third was creating something that didn't look and feel like a toy. The larger size body looks and feels natural and is in proportion to the neck. I also like to think they are a piece of art. I don't think anyone would be ashamed of playing one.
