To the uninitiated, the fanned-fret style might seem weird, but after a few minutes of playing the Ibanez SRFF805, most players are surprised by how comfortable the fanned frets are! The various fret-to-bridge distances enhance the tone, creating a better-sounding bass. Up until now, these instruments were only available from high-end boutique bass builders, but now Ibanez has worked their magic and produced a bass that has tons of boutique features, at a mass-production price.

The idea behind the fanned-fret system is to give each string its optimum tension. The tension helps to create a lively, open tone. On the SRFF805, the scale length is 34 on the G-string side, expanding to 35.5 at the low B.

Looking at them from straight ahead, fanned-fret basses are intimidating and seem like they'll be hard to play. But as soon as you strap one on, the perspective changes, and suddenly the frets seem to line up. It's a fun trick of perspective, like an optical illusion. The upside is that these fanned-fret basses end up being really fun to play.

The SRFF805 is a quality instrument designed for players who want more than just a piece of wood with strings on it. Outfitted with an Ash body, a 5pc Jatoba/Bubinga SRFF5 neck, a Rosewood fretboard, and medium custom-fanned inlayed frets, the SRFF805 is a whole lotta bass. The Mono-Rail V Bridge is the perfect match for a fan-fret instrument, allowing for superior transfer of vibration and ultimate intonation. Top it off with Bartolini BH1-5 pickups, for a full range warm punchy tone, and a 3-band EQ w/ Bypass switch and Mid-Frequency switch for complete sonic control.
