P-bass stereo output from split pickup to two amps; by PCG & Hohner of Germany..
Hohner Precision with a new PCG prepared neck.
(I worked on it all day and it is now changed to stereo form.I changed the split P-bass pickup set to run in/out through two separate jack sockets; meaning in essence that the low E and A go out through one volume and jack to one bass amp, while D and G go to a second bass amp... or if you like, you can use a 6 string guitar amp for the two higher strings? )
(Now there is an additional stereo mode choice arriving: ie in that I am soon adding a two into one junction cable which gives a further two options: first is that you can take the full pickup spread of the guitar but to your two separate amps and set one amp to full bass tone and the other to full treble or upper middle to give you that Rickenbacker stereo click and grunt... or that just for when you practice you can use the junction cable to feed the two halves of the pickup set into a single amp.
This bass is very much a literal stereo guitar as it lends itself to creating a spread of sound that can jump across the room as you play across the strings if the two amps are widely spaced. If you keep the two amps a bit closer the effect will be more subtle, even so the ear of anyone listening will be caught by the shifting sound source... and with one amp each side of the drums you can work on some patterns that coordinate the two.
I got the neck bare and finished it myself by french-polishing it with a sponging technique to give it an aged-roadworn look and by fitting a set of open gear Fender style machine heads. The neck was a perfect fit needing no chisel work or easing of the pocket in the body, and now I have drilled it for the four neck screws the strings align perfectly without fiddling about.
The string tree is a very old one I had that helps the aged look a bit.The scratchplate and pickups are nicely faded to cream.
It had no felt bushes on the strap buttons so I took them off and fitted some nice soft white ones I bought from Holland.
The set up has started with truss rod adjustment to flatten the neck relief a bit and some filing of the string grooves in the nut to help get the neck action low along with adjustment of the bridge. The truss rod operated nicely and I cannot see in clearly, but think it might be a double acting one; it is certainly smooth and easy to adjust.
Playing it earlier I found it has that zing above the deep bass grunt; nice wide spectrum pickups perhaps, but the stereo option adds so much... and the action is so light and easy without looking dead low yet, though perhaps in the next couple of days I will play around with taking it down a bit more? Now with the stereo mode added you have a very unique instrument.Either way already a really nice pro set up stereo split P-bass that would be more than a match for any Fender version! And for just £199? You cannot be serious!
