TECHNOFRET 6" SANDING BEAM

The TECHNOFRET 6" aluminium sanding beam is designed for sanding  the "fall-away"  in the frets beyond the 14th fret.

All  luthiers and guitar techs are (or should be) aware that the the ultimate low buzz-free action is only achieved by inducing a slight relief  between the 1st fret and the 14th  fret, and then making the frets from the 14th fall away gradually .

This is done so that the strings can be lowered as far as possible without  buzzing occurring when they hit the upper frets.

A quick and easy way to determine if your guitar needs a fallaway sanded into the frets is to put a capo just behind the first fret and then, with your right hand index finger,  press down the string at the last fret on the fretboard (with your fingertip on the other side of the fret,  ie between the bridge and the last fret). Now tap the string with your left hand index fingertip at the 14th fret.

If you can discern a space between the 14th fret and the underside of the string, then your guitar will  benefit from having a fallaway sanded into the upper frets, if you want an action which is both low and buzz free.

When you depress the string like this, what should  happen is that the string makes contact at the first fret and the 14th fret, and then contacts all the upper frets beyond the 14th.  It should not contact any of the frets between the first and the 14th.    

The TECHNOFRET 19" sanding beam   does a fantastic job of dressing all frets level, but it is too long to use comfortably when creating the fall-away after the 14th fret. This is why we are now producing a short 6" version of the sanding beam  to facilitate this operation.

The 6" beam is machined and lapped with all the precision of its longer counterpart, and comes with two  lengths  of 6" long abrasive , one of 240 grit and one of 320 grit.

A very useful tip when sanding the fall-away after the 14th fret is to cover the 14th fret with a couple of strips of masking tape, and then cover these strips with a piece of parcel tape.  As long as you let the sanding beam glide over the parcel tape, raising the height of the 14th fret like  this will  enable you to sand the upper frets at  just the correct angle, and will produce the desired fall-away without removing unnecessary material from the frets.

All in all, a most useful and affordable tool for luthiers  and guitar techs, both amateur and professional.
