Vintage 1960s Finnish-made Espana (Landola) acoustic guitar, solid spruce top
Delightful 1960s Finnish-made Espana (might be made by or associated with Landola) OO grand concert acoustic with solid spruce top and laminate ma****ny back and sides. FAN braced. Solid (now), and looks, plays, and sounds awesome, but has been through a lot - hence the bargain price. These guitars (along with Goya/Levins from Sweden) are incredibly lightly built, and so have two major traits: 1) they sound awesome, and 2) they suffer from structural and/or bridge issues unless they've been pampered. Obviously this one had been habitually over-strung, and was bellying severely. A bridge doctor would not help, because the top was not rotating - it was pulling straight up, even with lighter strings and lower tension. Eventually I went with the last resort, and added two braces in the fan pattern and stiffened another under the bridge. The top is now flat and stable. Did that cost any tone? I really couldn't tell, but the guitar was very difficult to play before, and was pretty much worthless. It is also strung with Silk and Steels. It would probably hold up to bronze 10s, but it sounds great with the low tension strings, and I would presume this is probably going to be a subtle "touch" player anyway. The neck also has a slight twist that you can see when sighting down the instrument. Fortunately, however, it is perfectly straight lengthwise along both the treble and bass sides. Thus no effect on playing. Has had three short cracks cleated above the sound hole, and has small cracks between the bridge pins, all of which have been stable (but keep this guitar strung lightly). Some cracking along the center seam, but one of the new braces essentially "cleated" that. Again, all of the issues with this guitar clearly stemmed from a life of being over-strung. I don't want to imply that the guitar is ready to fall apart, as it is now totally solid, and in fact can be played quite hard. Just don't fall prey to the lurking desire to go with heavier strings. Don't do it man! Action is just over 3/32, and it frets cleanly and intonates sweetly everywhere. These are not common instruments, but a solid top Espana/Landola OO would be about a $4 - 500 guitar without any issues. So... if you would be bothered by the fact that this guitar has been modified in order to save it, please just don't buy it. On the other hand if you would like a superb solid top grand concert for low-dough, this guitar is a great choice. I found this guitar quite a few years ago, and hoped it might be saveable. It is now one of my favorites to play.
